Jacquard, one of today's most popular fabrics, has an interesting history. Jacquard's special craft makes it a special existence, widely loved by the fashion industry. Today, UUNIQ also boarded the jacquard carriage, let us explore the magical journey together.

Jacquard fabric

Jacquard fabric is a textured fabric woven into an intricate pattern rather than printed, dyed or embroidered on it. Jacquard weaving originated from Italian brocades in the sixth century and remains one of the most popular fabrics.


Jacquard can be created from any material, since the fabric is defined by its weave, rather than the fiber it is woven from. You'll see silk and cotton jacquards in high-end and traditional applications, while modern designers are integrating a wider variety of fibers, including flax and cotton blends.

The History of Jacquard 

The name “jacquard” comes from The French creator Joseph Marie Jacquard, who began his textile career in the late 18th century as a "draw boy" on a traditional tapestry loom. Draw boy refers to a child who works six to eight hours a day, lifting half of his body weight each time he weaves reeds. The weaver will instruct the drawing boy which threads to pick up and where to move them.

Due to the dangers of the draw boy's job, Jacquard decided to find a better, less labor-intensive solution to creating the tapestry fabric. The result was a machine that used a series of punched cards, rather than a draftsman, to guide the loom and tell it which lines to raise at what time to create the jacquard fabric.

Jacquard did not know it when he invented the loom in 1804, but the design of this punched card would later influence the development of early computers and binary code.
